ROVERS SLIP UP TO ROBINS - 10/01/2005

Bristol City boosted their Coca-Cola League One play-off hopes with a 1-0 win over over third-placed Tranmere.

Leroy Lita scored the only goal of the game in the 11th minute - his 14th league strike this season - when he controlled Luke Wilkshire's through-ball and fired the ball home with his left foot.

But Tranmere eventually found their feet and Steve Phillips had to produce two excellent saves to keep out Ryan Taylor's free-kick and a close-range effort by Iain Hume.

The hosts pushed forward in the second half and it needed a goalline clearance by Mickey Bell to keep out Ian Sharps' 59th-minute header.

Bristol almost doubled their lead in the 73rd minute but home goalkeeper Russell Howarth saved superbly from Wilkshire.

The Merseysiders kept powering forward but City hung on defiantly to inflict only a second home defeat of the season on Rovers.
