Solano stifles Brazil

World Cup holders Brazil were held to a draw in Lima in a South American World Cup qualifying match.

Newcastle United striker Nolberto Solano earned a point for Peru against a Brazil side without the injured Roberto Carlos and Ronaldinho.

Solano, who has often been left on the bench by Newcastle in recent weeks, levelled with a header off a well-placed through-pass from Guillermo Salas.

AC Milan's Rivaldo, who has also been deprived of first team football at his club this season, had put Brazil ahead with a 20th-minute penalty, his first international goal since last year's World Cup quarter-final against England.

The draw put Brazil second in the South American World Cup qualifying group with seven points from three games, behind leaders Argentina on goal difference.

Peru are fifth with four points.
