Munich clash is special for Nol - 19/07/2003

Newcastle's Nolberto Solano will line up against two familiar faces when United face Bayern Munich, who will bring their own Peruvian contingent to Tyneside. The Bundesliga champions, at St James's Park on Tuesday, August 5, have striker Claudio Pizarro and teenager Paolo Guerrero in their side.

Pizarro was Bayern's second-top scorer last season with 19 goals while Guerrero has staked his claim for a first-team place this season with a spectacular winner in a friendly against St Pauli last week. Peru captain Solano, to play for his country against the United States in New Jersey next month, knows both players and is looking forward to pitting his wits against the pair next month in United's only pre-season friendly on home turf. Pizarro, nicknamed `Pizza', is certainly a player Solano admires, with the 24-year-old having scored 29 goals in 56 games for Werder Bremen before moving to Munich two years ago. "Pizza is a quality striker with a very good technique who scores all the time," said Solano. "He is quite tall but has great skill and is a very dangerous forward. "His record for Peru may not be as good as his record for his clubs, but he is definitely a top-class goalscorer who at the age of 24 has a great future. Being second-top scorer for Bayern last season proves his ability. "Pizza and I are good mates and sometimes go out together in Peru. It will be good to see him here with Bayern."

Nineteen-year-old Guerrero comes from Solano's home city of Alianza and until now has not broken out of Bayern's reserve side, but that could change this season. Solano added: "I have seen him play for the Peru national junior team and he is a big prospect. He has been brought carefully through Bayern's reserves and now looks to be on the verge of a first-team breakthrough."
