Nolberto Solano is pinning his hopes on a return to the Newcastle United side - so he can put in another match-winning performance against Manchester City.

The Peruvian winger scored the only goal of the game last season when United dumped City out of the FA Cup at St James's Park in a fifth-round tie.

Solano dropped down to the bench against West Ham last Saturday and admits he was angry with the way he played against Wolverhampton Wanderers in the previous game as Newcastle crashed out of this season's FA Cup.

And he is determined to be at his best should he be in Sir Bobby Robson's starting line-up against the Blues.

"I was injured against Tottenham and the week after I didn't do very well against Wolves," said Solano, whose last goal for the Magpies came in the 2-0 home win against Fulham last month.

"I was angry with myself as I always want to do very well. I have a chance to show the manager and the team tomorrow that I am back to my best.

"We have a strong squad and I have to believe in the team and whoever starts has to give their best for Newcastle."

He added: "I remember last season's game as I took it past the keeper to score. I hope to score again as it's been a long time."

Solano is under no illusions about the importance of United maintaining their impressive home form, which has propped up their Premiership challenge under the weight of a disappointing points return away from St James's.

"Every week is a crucial game for us," said Solano. "We're out of the Worthington Cup and the FA Cup and have to concentrate 100 per cent on the Premiership for the time being.

"It's a massive game tomorrow, and on Wednesday against Bolton as well. We have to take points where we can, especially at home.

"We took a massive point from West Ham and we're keeping on going. There's only one way."

Solano just missed Manchester City boss Kevin Keegan's time at St James's, having been signed by his successor Kenny Dalglish.

And he hopes Robson's United team will also go down in the history books as one of Newcastle's all-time great sides.

Solano said: "I saw highlights of some of the games and I know he was a very big player in the national team and for Liverpool and Newcastle.

"He did very well as the manager at Newcastle and was close to winning the title. We'll leave the reception to the fans as we have to concentrate on our game.

"I know they had a very good team when Kevin Keegan was here but that's in the past, it's now history. Now we have to believe in the moment.

"We are under Bobby Robson and there are different players. Alan Shearer is the only player left. This is a crucial three points and we must concentrate on that."
