In the latest round of South American World Cup qualifying action, Paraguay and Peru played out a 1-1 draw in Asuncion.

The home side had already hit the woodwork three times before Carlos Paredes put Paraguay ahead in the 28th minute.

However, Aston Villa midfielder Nolberto Solano netted from the penalty spot on 74 minute to grab a share of the spoils.

Paolo Guerrero was tripped in the box by Paraguay goalkeeper Justo Villar and skipper Solano fired his shot into the top left corner.

Both teams had opportunities to win the game late on but neither capitalised.

Peru goalkeeper Oscar Ibanez saved a Julio Enciso penalty in the 88th minute but striker Jefferson Farfan missed an open goal in time added on, which would have given Peru a crucial away win.

Paraguay: Justo Villar; Denis Caniza, Julio Caceres, Julio Manzur, Paulo da Silva; Julio Enciso, Carlos Paredes, Diego Gavilan (Fredy Bareiro 83), Aureliano Torres (Nelson Cuevas 53); Nelson Haedo, Jose Cardozo (Mauro Monges 73).

Peru: Oscar Ibanez; John Galliquio (Marko Ciurlizza 46), Miguel Rebosio, Santiago Acasiete, Juan Manuel Vargas; Nolberto Solano, Juan Jayo, Roberto Palacios, Jorge Soto; Andres Mendoza (Paolo Guerrero 67), Jefferson Farfan.
