Interview:
Dyer's World Cup - 29/05/2002
Nolberto Solano is backing Newcastle team-mate Kieron Dyer to take the
World Cup by storm - if he is fit to play. Solano had predicted Dyer
can make as big an impression as Michael Owen did at France 98. But
the Peruvian winger insists England coach Sven Goran Eriksson will be
wasting Dyer's talents by using him on the left side of midfield.
"Owen made his name against Argentina in the last World Cup as a
virtual unknown in international football and Kieron can repeat the
trick," said Solano. "People were asking who Owen was four years ago
and there could be people asking the same question about Dyer in a few
weeks' time. "He's been very unlucky with injuries but he's an
excellent player and with Kieron in the squad England have a great
chance because he's so versatile." But Solano added: "It's not fair to
ask Kieron to play wide on the left. "At Newcastle the season before
last, he played on that flank when we didn't have a natural left
winger but he tucked in as one of a central midfield three. "If Mr
Eriksson wants to use Kieron on the left and wants to get the most out
of him in that position then perhaps he will have to change his
tactics. "It can work, but not the way England played against
Paraguay."
