Super Solano travels bright - 17/03/2003
Nolberto Solano believes he has rediscovered his best away day form
after netting for Newcastle United in the splendid 2-0 victory at
Charlton Athletic on Saturday.
Before the weekend, the Peruvian hadn't started a Premiership game on
the road for the Magpies since the 4-3 Boxing Day defeat at Bolton
Wanderers.
United boss Sir Bobby Robson had sacrificed Solano and the practice of
playing two wingers away from St James's Park.
But an ankle injury for Laurent Robert and concerns over Kieron Dyer's
hamstring condition gave Solano an opportunity in South London.
And the 28-year-old seized the chance, giving an accomplished display
in the right flank and capping his performance with a 49th-minute goal
to wrap up the points.
He said: "It was nice to get the chance to play and it was nice to
score.
"The manager has said to me he needs the same as I gave him last
season and I hope I showed that. It's important for me I prove I can
play well for the team as the squad is so strong now."
Newcastle's victory at The Valley moved them to within five points of
table-topping Arsenal and while the Geordies remain very much an
outside bet for the Premiership crown, Solano insists they cannot be
ruled out of the equation just yet.
He added: "Nothing is settled yet, no one knows who is going to win
the league at this point.
"As long as we have the chance then we have to try and catch Arsenal.
"Nobody expected them to lose at Blackburn but it just shows what a
hard league the Premiership is.
"It's given us a chance of recovery and that's why our win over
Charlton was so important."
Solano netted at The Valley in a 2-2 draw in the 1998-99 campaign, his
first season on Tyneside.
He added: "A lot has changed since then. That came in a time when we
could never win a game in London."
