No luck…and we still need a striker! - 02/09/2003

No luck…and we still need a striker!
Jardel - in good nick!

As the transfer deadline passed yesterday, so did the opportunity to bring in a new face in the striking department – but it wasn’t for the lack of trying. I understand there were three players that Sam was interested in, obviously the biggest name being Sergei Rebrov. However it seems that, for once, Sa wasn’t able to wheel and deal with the success he’s used to – and that leaves us short up front.

Mario Jardel certainly has the ability, and when Sam recently claimed that Jardel may not be ready until December, I’d say that he was being slightly optimistic. You only have to look at him to see he needs to lose his fair share of weight, but I’m worried about his commitment. As is normal practice, those players that didn’t feature in the Charlton game had a run out on the turf after the game – and were joined by Jardel. The attitude and certainly the fitness of those players were, lets just say, superior to that of the Brazilian. He was well behind the players and although that in itself may simply be an indication how far he has to catch up, I can’t say that I was impressed with his willingness to give it all he had. I wouldn’t care, but all the corporate fans who stayed behind after the final whistle were watching the session – not that it seemed to bother the Brazilian.

Jardel has been joined at the Reebok by his compatriot Emerson Thome, and if it wasn’t the hardest of debut’s for the big centre-back, he came through well enough. He’s another player who needs games under his belt, Sunderland weren’t playing him as a clause in his contract meant that another Wearside appearance meant they would owe Chelsea a further cash payment. He also suffered a number of injuries at the Stadium of Light, although the boy is definitely a natural athlete. Along with Youri Djorkaeff at the club, his body fat is minimal – only 7%, infact just a touch less than myself!? AsI said, Charlton really didn’t ask any questions, but nevertheless, he’s experienced, he’s imposing, and his partnership with Florent Laville certainly has potential – it’s just the other end of the pitch that worries me!
