Not giving up on career - 06/06/2003

Robbie Elliott last night insisted he was right to return to Newcastle, despite United's decision to place the experienced full back on the transfer list two years into a four-year contract. The Gosforth-born defender was one of five first team players made surplus to requirements yesterday as Sir Bobby Robson prepares for a fresh assault on the Premiership title. But Elliott still believes he can make a success of his second spell at St James's Park and will not quit the North-East with a whimper.

Nikos Dabizas, Clarence Acuņa, Wayne Quinn and Jamie McClen have also been told they can leave Newcastle this summer, but injury-prone striker Carl Cort has won a surprise reprieve as Robson reshuffles his United pack. "I didn't know for definite that this would happen, but it's hardly a big surprise," explained Elliott form his holiday base in Portugal. "I had heard rumours and it's disappointing they proved to be true. "People might think I made a mistake by coming home, but which Geordie wouldn't have signed for Newcastle for the second time, given the chance? "I know plenty of players who would kill to be in my position and, as far as I'm concerned, this is not the end of my United career."

Elliott failed to start a Premiership game last season despite emerging as a regular under Robson during the 2001-02 campaign. The former Bolton favourite found himself behind Aaron Hughes and Olivier Bernard in the first-team pecking order, but remains a popular member of the squad.

It is understood Elliott and Robson have discussed his position on a number of occasions and, although the former is mystified at his lack of opportunities, no immediate move is planned. "Of course I have to look at things in a different light now that the club has made it clear I'm surplus to requirements," he added. "But I love it in the North-East and there is no way I want to move away if at all possible. Being placed on the transfer list is not the end of the world. I see it as a challenge and I will consider all my options when I return from holiday."
