I'm backing Shearer to sign off in style
He'll be looking for a result on Sunday

I'm sure Alan Shearer will be feeling confident that he can sign off at Old Trafford in the right manner on Sunday.

It's well documented that Alan could have signed for Man United during his career not long before coming to Newcastle, and I am sure deep down most of the Old Trafford fans understand his reasons for doing that.

If any of them had been in that position they would have done exactly the same.

He will get stick where ever he goes just because he is Alan Shearer, but at Man U he has always got a little bit more.

The beauty of it is that he can rise to the occasion.

And I expect him to do it again in what may be his last visit to the Theatre of Dreams - he has scored goals there before!

It's certainly a place I didn't get any joy from - I think I got sent-off there once and broke my nose, but never won.

But it is a good time for Newcastle to go there.

Fair enough, Man U's results have been good in the last few weeks, yet they are still vulnerable at the back and that could be exploited by a team in form in the shape of Newcastle.

Three or four weeks ago I would never have tipped Newcastle to go there and win - I would have predicted a solid victory for the home side.

The other thing is, Man U are not the team they used to be.

When I used to go there they had Roy Keane in the middle, and that was hard to break down and deal with.

Yes, they still have good players like Ryan Giggs and John O'Shea, but you don't want to be putting square pegs into round holes, which is what they are doing.

Nobody can complain about the run Newcastle have been on since Glenn Roeder took over as caretaker, but this will be a much sterner test.

This will be a true indicator of how far United have come since Graeme Souness left, even though it wasn't that long ago.

United are playing with a new injection of confidence and are in good shape.

And I fancy Newcastle to keep that up on Sunday and send Alan away from Old Trafford happy.
