They’re STILL the Masters - 10/09/2002

It was a great event and we all enjoyed it, but it could have been so much better! If anyone heard me commentating for SKY, you’ll know that I really wanted to face Liverpool in the final. I got the result, but it all went wrong when the game kicked off. Sometimes you really wonder if there’s a jinx at Newcastle. We had a great chance to win the competition – and some silverware, but we blew it.(/P)

We’d played well at the Telewest and we deserved to qualify for the finals. We then comfortably went through against Charlton and Man Utd but fell at the final hurdle. We had a much younger team than Scousers, and also had the player of the tournament in Peter Beardsley, but we just couldn’t finish the job! It wasn’t just the result that was disappointing, but it was probably our worst match we played. Believe me, we really wanted to win it! Credit must go to Liverpool though, some great players were on show and although they were more than past their best, they still had a touch of class.

The only consolation is that yesterday we played in the Master’s Golf Tournament, and finally I won something! I played with my old mate Peter Swan, and although the conditions were terrible, we really enjoyed it. Can hardly walk today though, and that was after going round in a buggy!
