Former England defender Warren Barton has signed for Queens Park Rangers after being released by Derby.

Barton, 34, was told he could leave Pride Park having not made a first-team appearance for the Rams this season.

He has joined QPR on a short-term deal completed in time for him to make his debut against Grimsby on Saturday.

Barton began his career at Maidstone before becoming part of the Crazy Gang at Wimbledon in a £300,000 move in June 1990.

While at Plough Lane he won the first of three England caps and spent five years with Wimbledon before a £4m move took him to Newcastle in June 1995.

Barton made 142 Premiership appearances for the Magpies before joining Derby for a nominal fee in February 2002.

Rangers boss Ian Holloway is also on the trail of midfielder Richard Johnson, who has been told he can leave Watford after 11 years at Vicarage Road.
